How to Prepare Your RV for Long-Term Storage: Complete Checklist
Properly preparing your RV for storage is just as important as finding the right facility. Cutting corners on prep can lead to costly repairs โ cracked plumbing, dead batteries, flat-spotted tires, and pest infestations. Here's your complete checklist.
1. Clean Everything โ Inside and Out
Start with a thorough exterior wash to remove road grime, bugs, and salt that can corrode your finish over time. Don't forget the roof โ it takes the most abuse. Inside, remove all food, wipe down surfaces, and clean the refrigerator. Leave the fridge door slightly open to prevent mold.
2. Winterize the Plumbing
If temperatures will drop below freezing at any point during storage, winterize your water system. Drain all tanks (fresh, gray, black), and either blow out the lines with compressed air or fill them with non-toxic RV antifreeze. Don't forget the water heater โ bypass it first, then drain it.
3. Battery Maintenance
Disconnect your batteries or use a battery maintainer/trickle charger. A fully charged battery can survive cold temperatures, but a partially discharged one can freeze and crack. Check water levels in lead-acid batteries and top off with distilled water if needed.
4. Protect Your Tires
Inflate tires to the manufacturer's maximum recommended PSI. Under-inflated tires develop flat spots during storage. If possible, use tire covers to block UV rays, and consider placing plywood under the tires to prevent them from sitting directly on asphalt (which can leach chemicals into the rubber).
5. Seal Entry Points Against Pests
Mice and insects will find their way into your RV if given the chance. Seal any gaps around plumbing penetrations, slide-outs, and the undercarriage. Place moth balls or peppermint oil-soaked cotton balls in cabinets. Some RVers swear by dryer sheets tucked into corners and compartments.
6. Fuel and Engine Care
Fill the fuel tank to prevent condensation, and add fuel stabilizer. Run the engine for a few minutes to circulate the stabilized fuel through the system. For diesel pushers, consult your owner's manual for specific storage procedures.
7. Cover or Shelter
If your storage spot is uncovered, invest in a quality breathable RV cover. Avoid tarps โ they trap moisture and can scratch your finish. Better yet, choose a covered or indoor storage facility for the best protection.
