15 Questions to Ask Before Renting RV Storage
Not all RV storage facilities are created equal. Before signing a contract, ask these 15 questions to avoid surprises, hidden fees, and regret.
Access and Convenience
1. What are your access hours? Some facilities offer 24/7 access, while others restrict entry to business hours or close on holidays. If you like early morning departures for trips, limited hours can be a dealbreaker.
2. How wide are the driving lanes? Narrow lanes make maneuvering a large RV stressful and risky. Look for lanes at least 30 feet wide for comfortable turning.
3. Is the surface paved or gravel? Paved surfaces are easier on tires and less dusty. Gravel can kick up rocks and create uneven parking.
Security
4. What security features do you have? Look for gated entry with individual codes, security cameras, perimeter fencing, and adequate lighting. Ask if they have on-site staff or a resident manager.
5. Has there been any theft or break-ins recently? A reputable facility will answer honestly. If they dodge the question, consider it a red flag.
Insurance and Liability
6. Do you require insurance? Many facilities require proof of RV insurance. This is actually a good sign — it means they take risk management seriously.
7. What does your facility insurance cover? Usually just the property, not your RV. Make sure your own policy covers storage situations including theft, weather damage, and vandalism.
Fees and Contract Terms
8. Is this a month-to-month contract or a fixed term? Month-to-month offers flexibility. Fixed terms may offer a discount but lock you in.
9. Are there any additional fees? Ask about admin fees, key deposits, late payment penalties, and move-out fees. These can add up quickly.
10. What's your cancellation policy? How much notice do you need to give? Is there a penalty for early termination?
11. Do rates increase, and how often? Some facilities raise rates annually. Ask about their rate increase history and policy.
Amenities and Services
12. Do you have a dump station? Essential if you need to empty tanks before long-term storage.
13. Is there an electrical hookup available? Useful for maintaining battery charge or running a dehumidifier inside your RV.
14. Do you have a wash bay or water access? Being able to wash your RV on-site before or after a trip is a nice convenience.
15. What's the height clearance for covered spots? If you're renting covered storage, make sure your RV (including AC units and antennas) fits under the roof.
